What is this food?
Catsup (tomato ketchup) is a sweet-sour condiment made from tomatoes, sugar, and spices. It’s usually used in small amounts to add flavor to meals.
Why it matters to health
Catsup can add a bit of fiber (about 0.3g per 100g) and some taste satisfaction, but it’s also relatively high in sugar (about 23.6g per 100g) and sodium (about 1021mg per 100g). Too much added sugar and salt can make it harder to keep your daily balance for energy and heart health—especially if you use it often on top of meals. The good part: when used lightly, it can help make healthier food (like grilled chicken, eggs, or veggies) more enjoyable.
Healthier tips
    • Use 1–2 tablespoons per meal as a guide, especially if you’re having it with rice or noodles.
    • Balance your plate: pair catsup with protein (fish, chicken, tofu, eggs) and fiber-rich sides (vegetables, beans) during your 3 full meals.
    • If you snack (1–2 times a day), avoid adding extra sweet sauces—choose water, plain yogurt, or fruit instead.
    • Try mixing catsup with calamansi, chopped tomatoes, or a little vinegar for flavor with less reliance on sugar and salt.
    • Check labels when possible: choose options with lower sugar and lower sodium.
